The Cause of Stress
Leaving aside all the reasons and excuses people have for being stressed, the real cause occurs when the fight-or-flight mechanism is activated because the autonomic nervous system’s ability to operate optimally is overwhelmed.
The fight-or-flight response mechanism is activated whenever psychological stress or perceived threat reaches a critical threshold. This response can be activated by; direct experiences of stress or perceived threat, experiences associated with previous stress or threat. Or simply thoughts, images, memories that evoke stress or a sense of threat.
The fight response tends to stimulate annoyance, impatience, frustration anger and rage. The flight response tends to stimulate fear, worry, anxiety and panic. Hysteria, overwhelm or numbness tend to result when the fight-or-flight response is activated but suppressed.
The resulting psychological and physiological impact can be devastating and is what most stress management techniques are designed to manage. However, unless the person’s unconscious reactions to the events of life that are causing the activation of the fight-or-flight response are reprogrammed, they will always have to manage their stress!
